Secondary Metabolite Chemistry of the Caribbean Marine Alga Sporochnus Bolleanus: a Basis for Herbivore Chemical Defence
نویسنده
چکیده
Three new prenylated phenols, sporochnols A, B and C, have been isolated from the Caribbean marine alga Sporochnus bolleanus. The structures of these new compounds were determined by spectral and chemical methods. Sporochnol A, the major metabolite, showed significant feeding deterrence toward herbivorous fishes, thus suggesting this compound functions in chemical defence.

Metabolomic Assessment of Induced and Activated Chemical Defence in the Invasive Red Alga Gracilaria vermiculophylla
In comparison with terrestrial plants the mechanistic knowledge of chemical defences is poor for marine macroalgae. This restricts our understanding in the chemically mediated interactions that take place between algae and other organisms. Technical advances such as metabolomics, however, enable new approaches towards the characterisation of the chemically mediated interactions of organisms wit...
متن کاملThe Great Diadema antillarum Die-Off: 30 Years Later.
In 1983-1984, the sea urchin Diadema antillarum suffered mass mortality throughout the Caribbean, Florida, and Bermuda. The demise of this herbivore contributed to a phase shift of Caribbean reefs from coral-dominated to alga-dominated communities. A compilation of published data of D. antillarum population densities shows that there has been moderate recovery since 1983, with the highest rates...
متن کاملNew Enzyme-Inhibitory Triterpenoid from Marine Macro Brown Alga Padina boergesenii Allender & Kraft
In continuation to our study of the chemical and biological potential of the secondary metabolites isolated from Omani seaweeds, we investigated a marine brown alga, Padina boergesenii. The phytochemical investigation resulted in the isolation of a new secondary metabolite, padinolic acid (1), along with some other semi-pure fractions and sub-fractions. The planar structure was confirmed throug...
متن کاملNutrient Enhancement Increases Performance of a Marine Herbivore via Quality of Its Food Alga
Herbivore performance and reproductive output are expected to covary with qualitative changes in the host plant. The availability of nutrients may be especially important for the quality of algae as food through its effect on both primary and secondary metabolism and within-plant variation. We evaluated the effect of the nutrient enrichment of the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus on the fecundity, ...
متن کاملPhytochemical Characterization of Marine Macro Alga Sargassum polycystem, Molecular Docking, and In Vitro Anti-bacterial Activity against Psuedomonas aeruginosa
Marine macro algae are useful to mankind as food, biofertilizer, and source of bioactive compounds such as agar-agar, alginates, and carrageenan. The aim of this study was to explore the phytochemicals, and the antibacterial activity of the marine alga Sargassum polycystem. The marine alga was subjected to ethanolic and methanolic extractions. The preliminary screening for phytochemicals showed...
